‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ 2 Concept Art Shows Off Early Rhino Design

New concept art from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 reveals an early look for Paul Giamatti’s Rhino.

The second entry in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield introduced audiences to Paul Giamatti’s Aleksei Sytsevich, a character better known to Marvel fans as the Rhino. Recently, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 concept artist Jerad S.Marantz shared a new piece of concept art from the movie that offers fans a look at an early design for villainous character.

After sharing an alternate look for The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Lizard, Jerad S.Marantz once again took to his official Instagram page to unveil more of his work for the movie, this time focusing on the Rhino. As revealed in the caption of the Instagram post, Marantz made this concept art “years before” Rhino made an appearance in the Andrew Garfield sequel. You can check out the Rhino artwork below.

Paul Giamatti made his debut as Aleksei Sytsevich in the opening moments of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which see the titular web-slinger pursuing and apprehending the villain. Sytsevich then returns for the final scene of the movie, equipped with a mech suit and a brand new nickname: the Rhino.

In the comics, Aleksei Sytsevich is one of the members of the Sinister Six, a supervillain team that was teased throughout the Amazing Spider-Man movies. However, Sony Pictures rebooted its Spider-Man series so that the hero could join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, scrapping its plans for the Rhino and the rest of the Sinister Six.

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is available on all home media formats.
