The latest episode of Grant Gustin’s The Flash revealed that 2049 Eobard Thawne was manipulating events in the present in hopes of destroying Cicada’s dagger and therefore releasing Thawne’s powers in his future prison. Todd Helbing made the following statement on the revelation about Eobard Thawne and Ralph’s realization that their plan to destroy Cicada’s dagger doesn’t add up:
“In the history of Cicada there was a point where Young Grace woke up, and that whole time Cicada was killing people. So now that they gave him the cure, what happened to all those people he continued to kill?”
Todd Helbing also clarified the dagger was the behind Eobard Thawne’s powers being dampened in his 2049 prison:
“The first time that Nora goes to Iron Heights, he’s talking about the power dampening in the cell. It’s the dagger he’s talking about.”
The Flash showrunner also teased the cliffhanger will set up the story for the sixth season of the Grant Gustin series:
“We’ve been dropping Easter eggs, especially in the back half of the season, about next season. It all plays into that.”
When asked if the final episode of season 5 might also tease next fall’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, Todd Helbing said:
“Yes, it does. Totally.”
