‘The Flash’ Theory May Explain Why Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne Looks Different

A new fan theory for The Flash may explain why Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne looks different from the previous versions of the villain.

The fifth season of The Flash revealed Nora West-Allen, Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future, was secretly working with Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard after Crisis of 2024. Fans were confused as to why Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne looked different from previous versions of the character, who was portrayed by Matt Letscher in early seasons of The Flash and on Legends of Tomorrow, but a new fan theory proposes that Thawne’s new look may be the result of the alternations to the timeline since the villain’s first appearance:

It then occurred to me that the Reverse Flash from Season 1 is perhaps not the same as the Reverse Flash of Season 5. Bare with me, because it involves a fair bit of time-travel. See, the Reverse Flash of Season 1 comes from the original unaltered timeline. The one where Barry doesn’t become the Flash until 2020. And because Eddie committed suicide, the Reverse Flash (S1) was paradox’d out of existence (eventually, despite Flashpoint). The Reverse Flash (S5) comes from the new timeline and is quite possibly not Eddie’s descendant, a distant cousin perhaps, thus explaining why he doesn’t look like Matt Letscher.

The only evidence I have to support this theory is during What’s Past is Prologue, where Eobard (S1) mistakenly assumes that Nora’s name is Dawn. That tells me that Barry and Iris have the Tornado Twins in the original unaltered timeline.

Matching wits with The Thinker, who by season’s end had harnessed the powers of all twelve bus metas he created, stretched Team Flash to their limits, but with the help of some new allies, Barry Allen (aka The Flash) and company were able to put a stop to the Enlightenment and save Central City once again. However, with the arrival of Barry and Iris’ speedster daughter, Nora, who arrived from the future admitting to having made a “big mistake,” things are anything but status quo. Will parenthood be the challenge that finally slows The Flash down?

The Flash stars Grant Gustin as Barry Allen / Flash, Candice Patton as Iris West, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow / Killer Frost, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon / Vibe, Tom Cavanagh as Harrison “Sherloque” Wells, Jesse L. Martin as Joe West, Danielle Nicolet as Cecile Horton, Hartley Sawyer as Ralph Dibny / Elongated Man, Jessica Parker Kennedy as Nora West-Allen, and Chris Klein as Cicada.

The Flash airs on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. on The CW.
