‘The Mandalorian’ Producers Discuss The Darksaber’s Live-Action Design

The iconic darksaber first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The Mandalorian producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have discussed what it was like to create the darksaber for the live-action Disney Plus series.

The Mandalorian was ripe with Star Wars references, from the franchise’s animated series to the live-action prequels. Seeing as the series brought so much of the lore together, the creators must have had some difficulties translating certain objects from animation to live-action. While Star Wars is spread throughout various mediums, their live-action content has always anchored the franchise. In The Mandalorian, fans got to see the darksaber, a relic that first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The darksaber was introduced as the end of the series when Moff Gideon showed it off after being injured by the titular character. Seeing as the series was the darksaber’s live-action debut, creatives Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni had to figure out how exactly to depict it. In an episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, Filoni discussed the process.

“That’s something that we have to experience. When we do take things that came from The Clone Wars, we have to think, in that show, they are stylized, and that was like an animated style of something from live-action. It’s not about doing any of those things one-to-one, but it’s about saying, ‘That’s based on something.'”

Jon Favreau chimed in by asking the most important question of them all: “What would George do?” In the end, the darksaber turned out to be one of the most popular reveals in the entire series. It has already been confirmed that the darksaber will return in the second season of The Mandalorian.

Here is the official synopsis for The Mandalorian:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Bill Burr, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte. The Star Wars series was written by Jon Favreau, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist is also on board as a co-executive producer.

The Mandalorian season two will premiere in October on Disney Plus. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news on Star Wars and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content in the future!
