‘The New Mutants’: X-Men Horror Film Earns A PG-13 Rating

The long-awaited X-Men film, The New Mutants, has finally received a PG-13 rating teasing horror elements and more.

Next month, we will finally have the opportunity to see The New Mutants, the long-delayed X-Men film that has been sitting on the shelf due to the Disney-Fox merger. Like the most recent X-Men projects from Fox, The New Mutants looks like a refreshing departure for the franchise. Based on the trailers alone, the film looks like it will be embracing horror elements, something that hasn’t really been touched on in modern comic book movies.

Many of the recent X-Men projects under Fox haven’t been afraid to have an R-rating either and have benefited from it both critically and financially with Logan and Deadpool. However, The New Mutants director Josh Boone has said in the past that he always intended for the film to have a PG-13 rating. Now, Exhibitor Relations is reporting that Josh Boone’s film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for, “Violent content, some disturbing/bloody images, some strong language, thematic elements and suggestive material…all involving people that were teens when this was filmed, but are now adults.”

Are you disappointed The New Mutants hasn’t received an R-rating? Sound-off in the comments below!

Here is the official synopsis for the film:

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants are being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

Directed by Josh Boone from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee, The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga.

The New Mutants will be released in theaters on April 3, 2020.
