‘Fantastic Beasts’ Star Eddie Redmayne Wants To Play The Riddler In Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’

Fantastic Beasts and Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne revealed he wants to play The Riddler in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

It’s been quiet on the casting front for Matt Reeves’ The Batman ever since it was confirmed that Robert Pattinson would be the one to replace Ben Affleck, which was back in May. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is rumored to have a rogue’s gallery that includes the likes of Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. We exclusively reported over the weekend that Matt Reeves is looking for a POC actress to play the next Catwoman. However, there is no indication of what Matt Reeves is looking for in The Riddler. But, Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne appears to be interested.

The last time The Riddler was featured on the big screen was in 1995’s Batman Forever, played by Jim Carrey. IMDb asked a bunch of actors what supervillain they would like to play. In the interview from TIFF, Eddie Redmayne revealed he is game of The Riddler:

“I’d love to play The Riddler. Just putting that out there.”

Eddie Redmayne is best known for his turn as Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts series and won an Academy Award for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts may prevent Eddie Redmayne from playing The Riddler in The Batman because of his commitment to Fantastic Beasts 3. Both are expected to film early next year.

Details for the Robert Pattinson-led Batman project are being kept under lock and key. Previous rumors once pointed to an earlier version of the script featuring Ben Affleck bookending the film as his current Batman while the film introduced Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader in his earlier years. But with Ben Affleck officially retired from the role, Robert Pattinson is replacing the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League star as Batman.

We know that The Batman will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and feature a Rogues’ Gallery of villains. Director Matt Reeves has also confirmed that it will not be directly based on Frank Miller’s acclaimed Year One comic and will make use of the Dark Knight’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous DC Films. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new movie trilogy with Robert Pattinson as Batman.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is one of the many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. These projects include The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern CorpsBlack AdamThe Suicide SquadSupergirlNew Gods, and Birds of Prey.

The Batman will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news on Robert Pattinson and the future of the DC Extended Universe!

Eddie Redmayne will return as Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts 3, set for November 21, 2021.
