‘The Suicide Squad’: James Gunn Confirms First Look Is A While Away

James Gunn has indicated that the first look that fans will have at his take on The Suicide Squad will arrive quite some time from now.

In a recent BTS photo, the cast and crew celebrated the arrival of the holidays as filming on The Suicide Squad goes on a short break. Filming on the project is said to be two-thirds of the way done, but based on a response to a comment asking about the state of the project, it will be longer before we see an official look at the movie’s cast. When asked about how long it would be before fans would get an official look at The Suicide Squad, James Gunn had one answer: “It’s gonna be a little while.”

James Gunn left the comment in the Instagram post below:

The Suicide Squad will take the franchise in a new direction, drawing more inspiration from Jon Ostrander’s classic run than the New 52 relaunch of the comics that inspired the 2016 movie. The new take is said to emphasize more comedy than its predecessor, but with an expected R-rating, it is also likely to be more violent and have a higher body count.

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad movie followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The sequel will see the return of four cast members from that film: Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is expected to deliver a new take on the titular supervillain team, with Idris Elba playing a new character on the team, David Dastmalchian starring as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and Steve Agee voicing King Shark. Other cast members confirmed for the ensemble picture include John Cena, Storm Reid, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Mayling Ng, Jennifer Holland, Pete Davidson, Juan Diego Botto, Alice Braga, Tinashe Kajese, Julio Ruiz, and Joaquín Cosío.

The Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 6, 2021.
