'Thor: Ragnarok' crosses the $800 mark at the worldwide box office as Disney reaches $5 billion in total box office for the year.
Thor: Ragnarok is expected to hit the impressive milestone today, making it the seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to do so. The other films in the franchise to gross over $800 million worldwide have been The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
This news adds to what has already been a tremendously successful year for The Walt Disney Studios. Besides Thor: Ragnarok, the studio has put out three of the most profitable films of the year, including Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which earned global totals of $1.26 billion, $863.6 million and $794.8 million, respectively.
Disney still isn’t done with 2017 just yet. Coco is still enjoying its success after a strong U.S. opening last weekend, and a little film called Star Wars: The Last Jedi ready to hit theaters next month.
Now in theaters, Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban as Skurge, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.
