‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Director Torrented Clips To Create Sizzle Reel

Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi recently came clean and fessed up that he torrented clips to create his sizzle reel for the film's initial pitch.

Taika Waititi has revealed that he torrented clips from movies to create his sizzle reel for Thor: Ragnarok, which he used to pitch to Marvel Studios.

Speaking with CBC’s Q radio show, Waititi discussed his initial pitch for Thor and what it entailed. He continued by discussing how he created his sizzle reel, and how pirated various clips to showcase them to Kevin Feige and co.

“I cut together little clips and shots. I basically illegally torrented and, erm, you know, ripped clips from the Internet.”

Waititi jokingly suggested to the crew of the radio show that they cut out what he said.

Despite his foray into piracy, Waititi’s sizzle reel certainly impressed Kevin Feige and the other producers, as he obviously got to direct the film in the end.

Sizzle Reels are created by directors to showcase their vision for a particular film by using clips and music from other films and artists to give producers a feel for what they’re going for. Waititi’s reel for Thor: Ragnarok utilized Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song”, which was later used in the film’s marketing and in the film itself.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok will be available on Digital HD starting February 20 followed by a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on March 6, 2018.
