‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Valkyrie & Grandmaster’s Relationship Explained

With all of the excitement surrounding the return of fan favorite characters like the God of Thunder, the Hulk and Loki in Marvel Studio’s upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, it is easy to forget that there are also a couple of really interesting new characters from the comics that are being introduced in the new film. Two characters that have definitely stood out in the trailers that have been released so far are Valkyrie, played by Creed star Tessa Thompson, and The Grandmaster, as played by the one and only Jeff Goldblum.

While speaking to ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic Con 2017, Thompson spoke about her character Valkyrie’s relationship to The Grandmaster. Here is what she said:

“I bring the Grandmaster things that may be of interest to him, and one of those happens to be Thor. [The Grandmaster is] always grouping people together in fights, and I brought the Hulk to him, and so I bring Thor as a would-be contender, and hilarity ensues.”

The actress also clarified that things between Valkyrie and Grandmaster will be kept completely platonic:

“I don’t have any romantic relationship with The Grandmaster. It’s a strictly work relationship, which is advantageous, mostly for me.”

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Sam Neill in an undisclosed role. Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on November 3, 2017.
