Tilda Swinton Responds To ‘Doctor Strange’ “Whitewashing” Controversy

Following the first teaser trailer for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, there was a bit of backlash regarding Tilda Swinton’s character in the film. In the film the actress portrays a female version of ‘The Ancient One’, which initially the studio received praise for the casting choice. However, following the trailer’s debut, Marvel Studios was accused of “whitewashing” the character who in the comics is a Tibetan-born male. Well, the actress is very aware of the backlash and has now commented on it brieflly while speaking with Den Of Geek.

The script that I was presented with did not feature an Asian man for me to play, so that was never a question when I was being asked to do it. It all will be revealed when you see the film, I think. There are very great reasons for us to feel very settled and confident with the decisions that were made.

The actress then added that she is “looking forward to seeing what’s made of what we’ve done. We’re feeling really excited and it was a good feeling to make it.” Sounds like the Scott Derrickson directed film might be tweaking more than just the character’s sex  but we will have to wait until November to see exactly what they’ve got up their sleeve. Sound off with your thoughts in the commments section below.
