Todd McFarlane Takes The Blame For His Failed ‘Spawn’ Reboot

Todd McFarlane opened up in a recent interview about the his planned Spawn reboot starring Jamie Foxx not getting picked up by a studio.

Over the last few years, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane was developing a film reboot of his own that he planned on producing, writing, and directing. The Spawn reboot attracted talent such as Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner, but the project eventually fell apart.

Todd McFarlane was hoping to get Blumhouse involved as he was shopping around his script to various studios. McFarlane also seemed hopeful about the project after the success of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as an R-rated comic book movie. Now that the Spawn reboot is seemingly dead, McFarlane opened up about the project while speaking with Forbes:

“I wrote the first draft of the screenplay. If I’d done my job and written a screenplay that mattered, that would have sold it. I’m culpable on that end to start with. That’s why I went to get Jason Blum to produce, and attached Jamie [Foxx ]and Jeremy [Renner] – to add the quality to it. My goal is to continue to add those kind of quality people at all levels. The more I can add those people, the less I become relevant as a risk.”

Do you hope a Spawn reboot eventually gets made? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!

Here is the synopsis for the 1997 Spawn film:

How can you fight for right in a world so steeped in evil? How can you protect those you love most from all that can do them harm? A man trapped between life and death is struggling to save the lives of his most beloved as the cloak and chains of Spawn explode onto the screen in a deadly tornado of untapped, unwrapped, merciless power.

Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippe, Spawn stars Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo, and Martin Sheen.

Spawn is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital.
