Tom Cruise Is ‘Too Old’ For Action Movies, Says ‘Jack Reacher’ Author

The author behind Jack Reacher recently mentioned that Tom Cruise is “too old” for action movies after the star played the title role in two Jack Reacher films.

Jack Reacher author Lee Child recently explained that he thinks Tom Cruise is “too old” to continue starring in action movies. Tom Cruise starred in two adaptations of the books by Lee Child, with the first Jack Reacher film doing relatively well at the box office while the second film, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back wasn’t well-received at all. Tom Cruise has obviously continued to star in a plethora of action adventures since, including several Mission: Impossible movies, as well as the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick.

The author has previously mentioned that Tom Cruise didn’t have the right physicality for Reacher’s towering stature as he’s depicted in the books. Lee Child doubled down on his thoughts in a recent interview with The Times, explaining that although Tom Cruise is a “terrific guy” the author thinks that he’s too old to keep throwing himself headfirst into adrenaline-fuelled action movies. The Jack Reacher author went on to say that Tom Cruise could get another few decades out of working as a character actor.

“Cruise was reluctant, He had his own investment in it, he was going to argue against it. It sounds extremely patronizing but I think it’s good for him. He’s too old for this stuff. He’s 57, he needs to move on, transition to being a character actor. He could get another 20 years out of it. He has the talent. He’s a terrific guy, very considerate, good fun.”
