Tom Cruise Confirms ‘Top Gun 2’ Is Finally Happening

It’s official. Top Gun 2 is finally happening.

While promoting The Mummy on Sunrise, a popular Australian morning show, Cruise was asked a question he’s been asked many times since Top Gun first hit theaters in 1986: Are rumors of a Top Gun 2 true? And this time, Cruise was able to confirm that, yes, a sequel is indeed happening. In fact, Cruise plans to start filming Top Gun 2 “probably in the next year.”

Back in the mid-80s, it was hotshot Navy pilots Maverick (Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer) that flew their way into popular culture. Of course, Goose (Anthony Edwards) helped contribute to the film’s lasting relevance, but unfortunately he’s not likely to make it into the sequel due to events in the first film. At this time, there’s also no word as to whether or not Kilmer will be back to reprise his role as Iceman. 

Alongside assembling the cast, a director and writer need to be found and a script and pre-production begun. With filming starting within the next year, there’s still a lot of work to do and details to emerge about the Top Gun sequel, but, for now, it’s at least nice to finally hear that Top Gun 2 is indeed happening.
