Original ‘Top Gun’ Editor Will Return For Tom Cruise Sequel

Top Gun co-editor Chris Lebenzon is set to return to cut the upcoming sequel starring Tom Cruise.

In 1986, Chris Lebenzon and Billy Weber co-edited the first Top Gun starring Tom Cruise Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise. Their work on Tom Cruise’s Top Gun earned the duo an Academy Award nomination for Best Editing in 1987 and their style is credited with introducing what is called the “MTV-style editing” to films.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has learned Chris Lebenzon will return to edit Tom Cruise’s upcoming sequel titled Top Gun: Maverick, 34 years after working on the original film. In addition to his work on Tom Cruise’s Top Gun films, Lebenzon’s editing credits include Crimson Tide, which earned him his second Oscar nomination, Sweeney Todd, Big Fish, and Dumbo.

Top Gun: Maverick follows Tom Cruise’s Pete Mitchell as he guides a new generation of pilots, including a young man named Bradley Bradshaw, the son of  Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, who died tragically in the first film.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ashley Edward Miller, and Zack Stentz, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.

Top Gun: Maverick will be released in theaters on June 26, 2020.
