While promoting his new film The Mummy, Tom Cruise opened up and revealed the title for the long-in-development Top Gun sequel.
While promoting his new film The Mummy directed by Alex Kurtzman, Cruise opened up in an interview with Access Hollywood and revealed the long-in-development sequel will be titled Top Gun: Maverick.
The first Top Gun about hotshot Navy pilots hit theaters back in 1986 and was directed by the late Tony Scott and would go on to become one of the most iconic action films of all time. The sequel which first came into development almost seven years ago is eyeing Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) to direct.
In the interview, Cruise confirmed the sequel will be a competition film and the plot will indeed include drones as well as aircraft carriers. The project has been long rumored to have a plot revolving around drone technology as it explores the end of an era for dogfighting and fighter pilots.
Additionally, Cruise confirmed Top Gun: Maverick will match the same style and tone as the original film and that Composer Harold Faltermeyer will return to score the sequel, however, there was no word on whether or not the soundtrack would once again feature the music of Kenny Loggins.
Skydance CEO David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer, producers of the original will return to produce the sequel with Cruise. The actor has already met with potential helmers to ensure the project will be ready to shoot when he wraps Mission: Impossible 6 which is expected to complete production this July. Val Kilmer has also confirmed that he was asked to come back to reprise his role as Iceman in the sequel.
As of now, Top Gun: Maverick does not yet have a release date.
