Although Venom received mixed reviews upon its release, the film proved to be a hit at the box office and earned a total of $856.1 million worldwide. It wasn’t long before a sequel moved forward with Tom Hardy reprising the titular role and while Sony never officially announced the date, it is widely believed that Venom 2 is the Marvel film the studio set for a theatrical release on October 22 of this year.
However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced studios to readjust their release slate for the next few months as businesses close and individuals practice social distancing, all in hopes of slowing the spread of the virus. Last night, it was reported that Sony has opted to push back the release dates of several films, including Jared Leto’s Morbius, while its untitled Marvel project scheduled for release on October 8, 2021, is now TBD.
Sony’s decision left many fans wondering if the release of Tom Hardy’s Venom 2 might also be affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Now, IGN reports that Venom is currently still on track for a theatrical release on October 22, 2020.
Directed by Andy Serkis from a script written by Kelly Marcel, Venom 2 stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Naomie Harris as Shriek, and Woody Harrelson as Carnage. In the meantime, fans can turn to all home media formats to re-watch Tom Hardy’s first Venom movie:
