The emotional climax of the Infinity Saga occurs when Iron Man sacrifices his life to defeat Thanos at the end of the film. Robert Downey Jr.’s send-off to his iconic character was gut-wrenching, emotionally heartfelt, and apparently completely improvised.
This bombshell comes from Robert Downey Jr.’s web-slinging co-star Tom Holland in an interview with Pinkvilla. According to Tom Holland, no script was actually written for Tony Stark’s death scene. Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland and his co-stars were just brought onto set to film the scene and given a vague understanding of how the filmmakers wanted to the scene to play out. From there, the actors were given free rein:
“It was interesting because when we shot that scene with Robert there was no real script, at all. It was just Kevin Feige, the two Russo Brothers, myself, Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle. They kind of brought us to set, they kind of told us what was going to happen, or what they wanted to happen, and then we sort of just improvised if I can remember correctly. So it was a really, really interesting way to shoot such a kind of pivotal scene of the movie, but it was a really emotional day and I mean looking back on it now it was maybe the craziest day I’ve ever had on set, you know? But it was really amazing and turned out to be a fantastic scene.”
It seems appropriately satisfying to know that Robert Downey Jr. was able to leave the franchise on his own terms. But what do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
