Marvel Reportedly Made Sony Cut Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Cameo From Tom Hardy’s ‘Venom’

A new report suggests Spider-Man actor Tom Holland did in fact film a cameo for Tom Hardy’s Venom film, but Sony had to cut the scene after Disney and Marvel asked the studio to remove it.

Leading up to the release of Tom Hardy’s Venom last year, rumors swirled claiming Tom Holland had filmed a cameo as Peter Parker for Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off. It was even suggested that Tom Holland appeared as Peter Parker amongst a group of students on a field trip to the Life Foundation. But when Venom hit theaters in October, those rumors appeared to be false.

But it turns out, there may have actually been some truth to the rumor that Tom Holland was originally going to appear opposite Tom Hardy in Venom. On a recent episode of Collider Live!, comedian Jay Washington revealed new details, claiming that it was because of Marvel and Disney that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker did not appear in the Tom Hardy film:

“I’ll tell you the truth: Tom Holland did film a scene for Venom… Marvel saw the movie and was like ‘Take him out. Take this scene out.’ Peter Parker was in Venom, not Spider-Man.”

While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appears to be out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for now, the web-slinger could be crossing over into Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters now that the studio’s partnership with Marvel Studios and Disney has come to an end. After failing to reach a new agreement to co-produce future Spider-Man films, Marvel and Sony parted ways going forward. Tom Holland, however, remains committed to the role with Sony already in development on the next standalone Spider-Man film.

Meanwhile, Sony is also moving forward with a sequel to Tom Hardy’s Venom which managed $856 million at the worldwide box office, even without Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Andy Serkis is set to direct the Venom sequel with Tom Hardy returning in the role of the reporter-turned-Spider-Man nemesis Eddie Brock along with Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson in their respective roles. Sony reportedly wants the Venom sequel to begin filming in November. The film will continue to expand Sony’s Universe of Spider-Man characters. The script is being written by Kelly Marcel, who developed the story with Tom Hardy himself.
