(Be warned, this article contains spoilers for International Iron Man #7)
It’s no shock that Tony Stark’s family trouble would be at the center of an Iron Man storyline. Even when it comes to the cinematic portrayal of the character, family life for Tony Stark is sure to cause trouble, whether it’s attempting to live up to his father’s name, or his failed relationship with Pepper Pots, there always seems to be something going on with the Stark family.
Well, International Iron Man #7 revealed this week that Stark was in fact adopted. The Brian Michael Bendis-written series previously introduced readers to a S.H.I.E.L.D agent named Amanda Armstrong, with the latest issue in the series confirming that Amanda, alongside another S.H.I.E.L.D agent named Jude, are in fact Tony Stark’s biological parents.
The plot thickens as the issue also reveals that Jude was actually a double agent working for Hydra. The comic explains that Jude sold S.H.I.E.L.D out to Hydra, exposing the organization’s secrets to their evil counterparts in exchange for protection of his family. When Amanda found out the truth about Jude, understandably not taking it lightly, she went on to stab him to death.
The reveal of the double-crosses spurred Amanda on to abandon all ties with S.H.I.E.L.D, including baby Tony, which is where Howard Stark stepped in and raised the child as his own, alongside his wife.
With the big reveal wrapping up the well received International Iron Man series, fans will have to wait for the return of Invincible Iron Man in November, to witness Stark dealing with the news first hand, as well as trying to rebuild the relationship with his newly discovered, long-lost mother.
