‘Top Gun 2’ Eyes Joseph Kosinski To Direct

Director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) has emerged as the front-runner to direct Top Gun 2 starring Tom Cruise.

Variety reports director Joseph Kosinski has emerged as the front-runner to direct Top Gun 2.

Tom Cruise recently confirmed the film was in development with himself set to return as Maverick but now sources close to the project have revealed that Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise on the sci-fi flick Oblivion, is close to making a deal with Paramount to helm the project.

The first Top Gun about hotshot Navy pilots hit theaters back in 1986 and was directed by the late Tony Scott. The film went on to become one of the most iconic action films of all time.

The sequel first came into development almost seven years ago and is said to have a plot revolving around drone technology as it explores the end of an era for dogfighting and fighter pilots.

Skydance CEO David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer, producers of the original will return  to produce the sequel with Cruise. The actor has already met with potential helmers to ensure the sequel will be ready to shoot when he wraps Mission: Impossible 6 which is expected to complete production this July.

Val Kilmer has also confirmed that he was asked to come back to reprise his role as Iceman in the sequel.

As of now, Top Gun 2 does not yet have a release date.
