‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Will Have Tom Cruise Fly Aircraft But Not Fighter Jets

Recently, it was reported that Tom Cruise would continue his trajectory of realistic stunts with his upcoming sequel Top Gun: Maverick. Rumors arose that as a result of production halting on the upcoming film, Cruise would be trained to learn how to fly Navy fighter jets personally.

However, such rumors have been debunked – although Cruise will still have a chance to pilot aircraft in Top Gun: Maverick.

According to EW, production on Top Gun: Maverick has not halted and continues to shoot until this spring, sans upcoming holiday breaks. Also, civilians are not allowed to use government-owned equipment, so Cruise won’t be able to fly Navy fighter jets as a result.

But don’t let that regulation underwhelm you, because given that Cruise is a licensed pilot himself and even flew a helicopter in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, he will certainly be flying some types of aircrafts in the new film. Given Cruise’s dedication to pleasing the audience with his practical stunts and visceral spectacle, it will certainly be something incredible to see on the big screen.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ashley Edward Miller, and Zack Stentz, with Christopher McQuarrie. Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Thomasin McKenzie, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Danny Ramirez, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris.
