The last time we saw the fearless Autobot leader Optimus Prime take the lead in a feature film was also the last time Michael Bay directed a Transformers movie. Transformers: The Last Knight was the fifth installment in the Michael Bay Transformers film series to hit theaters and, to no one’s surprise, it quickly tanked among critics and fans alike. Bay’s Transformers films felt outdated and hollow. It was clear they couldn’t care less about the stories they were trying to tell as long as the robot-destroying action kept flowing. That formula was probably good for the first film, but after that, moviegoers weren’t buying Bay’s storytelling anymore.
In comes Travis Knight with Bumblebee showing us that these films can have a strong plot with great characters and still have great action sequences, making critics and fans want more of these types of Transformers movies in the future. Well, Transformers producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura has great news for all of us. While speaking to Japanese entertainment website Cinema, Di Bonaventura confirmed they’re working on a Bumblebee sequel featuring Optimus Prime and that they’re also working on a Transformers: Last Knight sequel as well. Here’s what he had to say:
“We are already working on two projects and both have scripts under development. One is the latest in the main family series following the events of Transformers: The Last Knight and the other is a sequel to Bumblebee. So, we are thinking of films where Optimus Prime and Bumblebee will be the buddies, but when Optimus and Bumblebee are the movies of the protagonists … how human beings get involved in their drama In the first place, the size is different between human beings and theirs …. It’s a worrying point (laughs).”
There’s still no word if Michael Bay will be attached to these projects, although it seems likely he will be just as he was with Travis Knight’s Bumblebee. Di Bonaventura spoke in the past about how hard it is to make a good Optimus Prime film and to adequately portray the legendary Transformer hero on the silver screen.
