Future ‘Transformers’ Movies Could Feature Love Stories Between Robots But Definitely No Sex

In an interview with Collider at SXSW, Transformers film series producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura discussed the possibility of exploring love stories between the robots in disguise down the line.

Paramount’s Bumblebee offered fans a relatively smaller and more personal story than previous entries in the Transformers franchise, resulting in the most acclaimed chapter of the live-action film series. Now, Lorenzo di Bonaventura has stated the franchise will explore a love story between Transformers as part of their plans for the future:

“One of the things I want to see, and I don’t know if we’ll do this particular thing, but I think we will eventually do a love story between Transformers. What does a love story mean? Definitely not sex, maybe not even kissing, but the idea that they would have that emotional crush has never really been brought in. That’s kind of the direction we’re going to try to head into, which is to give them human desires that, up until now, we haven’t seen much of. I think that will change the relationship with the Transformers. So we may do some wild action, we’ll do action for sure in the main line, but it’s a different kind of attempt. I know we will hold on to a lot of the lessons from Bumblebee.”

Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently confirmed the Transformers franchise will continue with a sequel to Bumblebee and direct follow-up to The Last Knight

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

Bumblebee will be available on Digital HD starting March 19 followed by 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on April 2, 2019.
