The Rotten Tomatoes score for Sony’s Venom has officially been revealed and out of 36 reviews so far, it’s already way below the 63% percent rating earned by 2007’s Spider-Man 3.
Spider-Man 3 was a massive success for Sony financially when it was released in theaters, though the film is still maligned by some fans for its overabundance of villains and mishandling of the character Venom. The film earned nearly $900 million at the worldwide box office and featured the first live-action appearance of the iconic symbiote-controlled Eddie Brock, who was played by That 70’s Show star Topher Grace. 11 years later, the fan-favorite Spider-Man foe is headlining his own movie which opens this weekend, played by The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy.
Sadly, it doesn’t seem like the titular character’s latest appearance is hitting with critics once again and in fact, the film’s score is significantly below the 63% earned by Spider-Man 3. Right now, out of 36 reviews, Venom holds a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score of 25%. Below is the critics consensus currently listed for Venom, which refers to the film as “noisy” and “desperate.”
“Venom’s first standalone movie turns out to be like the comics character in all the wrong ways – chaotic, noisy, and in desperate need of a stronger attachment to Spider-Man.”
