The previous October opening weekend record holder was Alfonso Cuaron’s Academy Award-winning film, Gravity, which opened to $55.7 million. Venom is already set to annihilate that record as it eyes an opening weekend tally around the $70 million to the $80 million range.
Although Lady Gaga’s little monsters couldn’t overthrow Venom at the box office this weekend, the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper is also set to perform above expectations. The remake opened to $15.8 million on Friday alone and is expected to come in around the $42 million mark or higher.
Did you get a chance to see the film? How well do you think the film will perform at the box office beyond its opening weekend? Will the film have legs throughout the month of October? Or will the not-so-enthusiastic reactions find the film reaching significant drops week-to-week? sound off in the comments below, and be sure to continue following Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news about Sony’s latest slate of Marvel films.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, the film stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.
One of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters takes center stage as Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) becomes the host for the alien symbiote Venom. As a journalist, Eddie has been trying to take down the notorious founder of the Life Foundation, genius Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) – and that obsession ruined his career and his relationship with his girlfriend, Anne Weying (Michelle Williams).
Upon investigating one of Drake’s experiments, the alien Venom merges with Eddie’s body, and he suddenly has incredible new superpowers, as well as the chance to do just about whatever he wants. Twisted, dark, unpredictable, and fueled by rage, Venom leaves Eddie wrestling to control dangerous abilities that he also finds empowering and intoxicating. As Eddie and Venom need each other to get what they’re looking for, they become more and more intertwined — where does Eddie end and Venom begin?
Venom is now playing in theaters.
