Venom Co-Creator Cites Older Critic Age Group As Reason For Negative Reviews

Out of all the comic book movies that were released this year, Venom is certainly the most peculiar. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, but audiences were surprisingly more taken by the film than expected. In fact, our own Shawn Madden praised the film for being a blast.

Critics be damned, because despite the nature of the critical reception, Venom is one of the biggest films of 2018 at the worldwide box office, even grossing more than Deadpool 2 and Ant-Man and the Wasp in worldwide totals. Venom co-creator Todd McFarlane was particularly impressed by the film, and believes that much of the negative critical reviews were due to the fact that many critics are of an older age group that perhaps, “didn’t get it.”

McFarlane explained to Yahoo why he feels this way about critics who weren’t too fond of Venom: 

“It was a big roller coaster ride. Visually, everything was coming at you. I think at times… the critics get it wrong in that they forget their age. They come in, and they’re 42 years old, and they come in with their attitude and they’re going, ‘Stop it.’ What if you were 16, 15, and you were watching this movie? You would love it… Of course you would love it.”

McFarlane also defended the film, seeing it as a great adaptation of the character he co-created:

“This thing delivered everything it was supposed to. It was gnarly, it was nasty, it has a big cool Venom, which was what I was looking for. [That] was my bias — I just wanted to see the visualness of Venom that I had created 30 years prior.”
