One of the screenwriters behind Venom has confirmed that the film is getting a sequel.
In a recent interview with Discussing Film, Jeff Pinkner revealed that a Venom sequel is in development. The screenwriter also mentioned that he’s not writing the project, at least “as of right now.”
“I can’t say anything other than that it is happening.”
Sony currently has two Marvel projects set to hit theaters in 2020, with one of them being a sequel. It’s fairly safe to say at this point that the project is the follow-up to Venom.
Venom recently crossed the $850 million mark at the worldwide box office. The film has out-grossed superhero films such as Justice League and Wonder Woman and has also made more than Sony’s two Amazing Spider-Man films and is nearing the worldwide box office totals of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Starring Tom Hardy, Venom follows Eddie Brock as he attempts to revive his journalism career by investigating the Life Foundation only to come into contact with an alien symbiote that bonds with him, granting him powers and transforming him into the titular anti-hero.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom also stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson. The film is still playing in theaters.
