Immediately after his final episode on The Walking Dead, AMC announced that a series of films that focused on Andrew Lincoln’s character, Rick Grimes, would soon be going into production. Since then, AMC has been rather silent about what it will involve but we have been able to learn a few things since that big episode.
Since Rick Grimes departed The Walking Dead, we have of course learned that there will be a trilogy of films based around Andrew Lincoln’s character. The films will reportedly be stretched out over the course of a few years. The exact release dates have not been released so we cannot say how many years will pass between each installment.
What we do know about the individual films is sadly limited. We do know, howPreviewever, that the films will, at the start, focus on Rick Grimes trying to get back to his family. As time goes on this is expected to change and the films are expected to take place in the northeast corner of the United States.
In a press release, AMC stated that the films would go into previously unexplored parts of the apocalypse:
The first film will explore the story of where Rick is taken and what he faces in a new corner of the zombie apocalypse.
Currently, it is unknown who will be joining Andrew Lincoln in the cast. As of right now, none of The Walking Dead‘s supporting characters are signed on to the film. However, several of the shows the main cast have signed on to additional Walking Dead related content that could potentially expand to the Rick Grimes trilogy.
What do you all make of the upcoming Walking Dead Rick Grimes trilogy? Do you want to see Andrew Lincoln stay in the role? Has the show gone on for too long? Are these films the shot in the arm that the franchise needs? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Here is the synopsis for the second half of The Walking Dead Season 9:
“The second half of “The Walking Dead” Season 9 finds our groups of survivors, both old and new, continuing to deal with the impact of events that took place during the six years that have passed. Since the disappearance of Rick, many of these characters have become strangers to each other, and in some ways, strangers to themselves. What they do know is that they are in undeniable danger. They will soon realize the world just beyond does not operate as they thought. The group’s rules and ways of survival no longer guarantee their safety. A whole new threat has crossed their paths, and they soon discover it’s unlike any threat they have encountered or endured before. The group will start to question what they think they see. What may appear to be normal in this post-apocalyptic world could actually be more disturbing and terrifying than when the apocalypse first broke out. All that is certain is the stakes are high and numerous.”
The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Austin Amelio, Khary Payton, Katelyn Nacon, Pollyanna McIntosh, Callan McAuliffe, Avi Nash, and Samantha Morton as Alpha.
The Walking Dead Season 9 returns Sunday, February 10 on AMC.
