‘The Walking Dead’: EP Scott M. Gimple On Eugene’s Loyalties

Warning: this article features spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7 Finale…

In this past Sunday night’s Season 7 Finale of The Walking Dead, Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) told Eugene (Josh McDermitt) that she wasn’t giving up on him, even though he has seemingly reverted back to his old cowardly ways, aligning himself with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his Saviors instead of staying true to Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the rest of the survivors back at Alexandria.

Executive producer and showrunner Scott M. Gimple recently spoke to TV Line about Sasha’s parting words to Eugene, saying that moment was “a hint to what the story is.” He added:

“It certainly looked like he was still a Savior. But is that going to haunt him… change him? Or is he forever Negan?”

Personally, I don’t think Eugene is or ever was 100% “Negan.” I think this whole thing was just a ruse and that he’s really just biding his time until the time is right. At least, I really hope so. I’m sure some viewers might find it pretty easy to imagine that Eugene would just take the cowardly route just to save his own skin, but I’ve really grown to like this character (especially in the show, as I never really cared for him in the comics), so I hope that’s not the case. If this wasn’t all a ruse and he is actually just being a coward, hopefully, Sasha sacrificing her own life in an attempt to kill Negan will serve as a wake-up call for Eugene and get him to start working on bringing the Saviors down from the inside.
