This probably isn’t much of a surprise, but we can say for sure that Jesus bit the big one with the recent midseason premiere of The Walking Dead.
In the midseason finale, while dealing with a new threat, Jesus found himself at the end of a Whisperer’s blade when he ended up stabbed. With the introduction of the new antagonists within The Walking Dead, they managed to strike first blood and take the Hilltop’s current and now former leader in the process.
While much of the episode of The Walking Dead revolved around either Negan returning to the Sanctuary or Michonne, Daryl, and Tara seeking answers from the captured Lydia, Jesus’ death created a new problem for the Hilltop. With Maggie still absent and off with Georgie at another community, the next in line to lead the Hilltop would be Tara. As it was pointed out, Jesus looked to Tara for guidance, so the citizens, in turn, now look to her to lead them. More than that, they will want justice.
While actor Tom Payne has talked in the past about what he had hoped for Jesus’ character arc on The Walking Dead, that is no longer the case. Though Jesus is alive and well in the comics, his character and relationship with Aaron have come to an end on the AMC series. With Rick gone, Danai Gurira exiting soon, and Lauren Cohan currently starring in another series, you’ve gotta wonder if the supporting characters will end up stepping into more leadership roles.
After all, Jesus was a key ally to the surrounding communities in The Walking Dead and, though reluctant, was starting to come into his own as a leader at the Hilltop. His death, though, has left a huge hole in the lives of many who hoped to see his storyline continue. Don’t expect him to rise again now that the Hilltop has buried him.
