‘Walking Dead’: Morgan Was Going To Appear At Terminus

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead.

During the first season of AMC’s The Walking Dead, Morgan (Lennie James) was introduced and even though his appearance was brief, he became an instant fan favorite. When Morgan appeared again during a post-credit scene in season five, it was a cheer-worthy moment.

Turns out that Morgan’s storyline was originally very different. Scott Gimple, showrunner for Dead, explained on the season 6 Blu-ray/DVD commentary that Morgan was going to be featured first again during the Terminus reveal.

“At the end of 416, Rick would say, ‘They’re screwing with the wrong people, and a gentleman would come out of the shadows of the train car and he would say, ‘Yeah, they are.’ And that would be Lennie, as Morgan. And it looked like it almost could have happened.”

James was on board for this idea.

“We almost made it happen.”

Instead of Morgan being involved with Terminus, it was Carol (Melissa McBride) who saved Rick and the group. In the end, it came down to a schedule conflict and wanting to give Morgan’s character enough time to evolve, explained Gimple.

“Because it looked like a show that Lennie was on was ending. The time was right. But Lennie had a commitment to another show, which allowed us to do something super cool, which allowed Morgan to go on a journey after this episode in Season 5 to see how he catches up to Rick and the group.”

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 23rd at 9 PM EST.
