‘The Walking Dead’ Producer Gale Ann Hurd Talks Rick In Season 7B

'The Walking Dead' executive producer, Gale Ann Hurd, gives a hint at how Rick Grimes will face the threat of Negan in the second half of season 7.

The Walking Dead has never skirted around the gore and desolation that one would expect to go hand in hand with a zombie apocalypse, but the most recent season has left fans exhausted on behalf of the show’s wrung-out characters.

The series’ protagonist – former deputy sheriff and current badass Rick Grimes – has barely survived this season, along with a handful of other leading characters. He has been forced into serving the merciless killer, Negan, in order to protect his community of Alexandria from his wrath; this was a choice he made after losing two of his friends to Negan’s beloved baseball bat, Lucille. Rest in pieces, Glenn and Abraham.

However, Rick regained some of his confidence in his people and their chances in the mid-season finale, ‘Hearts Still Beating’. According to the show’s executive producer, Gale Ann Hurd, Rick will make the comeback fans have been waiting for in the second half of season 7. Hurd told Digital Spy:

“Rick and the gang have found their mojo again and they are going to work on rising up against Negan, and doing it right this time… As we saw last season, they underestimated his strength and just how nefarious a leader he was. They’re not going to do that again.”

It seems in the upcoming episodes of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes’ priority is going to be uniting the communities of survivors a little friendlier than Negan’s Sanctuary, such as the Hilltop colony, the Kingdom of King Ezekiel, and his own Alexandria. But as we’ve seen, the biggest challenge might be convincing the people of those communities to fight, rather than the eventual battle itself.

The Walking Dead season 7 returns from its hiatus on February 12th on AMC in the US, and February 13th on FOX in the UK.
