Warcraft director Duncan Jones has revealed that he is waiting to hear from Legendary about the possibility of a sequel.
One of two films (the other being the abysmal Assassin’s Creed) that fans hung their hopes on last year was Duncan Jones‘ Warcraft, which was of course based on the fantasy worlds seen in Blizzard’s mega-hit MMORPGs Warcraft and World of Warcraft.
The film was met with middling reviews and it didn’t gross enough at the domestic box office (it did very well overseas, though) to warrant an immediate sequel green light, so there has been very little news in terms of a sequel. However, Jones did give us a bit of an update today on Twitter, stating that he’s still waiting to hear back from the studio, Legendary Entertainment, on the possibility of a sequel. Here’s the tweet in question:
I’m guessing I’m probably in the minority here, but I actually really dug Warcraft. I’ve only played World of Warcraft a very little bit, but for me, it appeared that Jones really nailed that world with this film and did so in a way that didn’t alienate non-fans. I’m really hoping he gets a chance to make his follow-up, because I think this franchise still has so much potential. Aside from Game of Thrones, there’s not a lot of great fantasy franchises out there these days, but I thought that Warcraft showed a lot of promise in that regard.
Here’s to hoping Jones doesn’t have to keep waiting too long to hear back from Legendary. Until then, it seems the Alicia Vikander-starring Tomb Raider is our next big hope for breaking the “video game movie curse.”
