The WarnerMedia series will apparently be based around an order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. The title itself seems to be inspired by the Sisterhood of Dune novel that was a part of an ongoing prequel series from writers Brian Herbert and Keven J. Anderson. When the series will take place in relation to the upcoming film, however, is currently unknown.
On the Bene Gesserit, director Denis Villeneuve expressed enthusiasm about the order and seemed to think that a series centered around the order would make for a great television series:
The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me. Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series.
The WarnerMedia series will have Denis Villeneuve and the film’s co-writer Jon Spaihts serve as executive produce the series with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert for the Frank Herbert estate. Writer Kevin J. Anderson will also co-produce the series. Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the pilot episode with Jon Spaihts set to write the show.

The project won’t mark the first time that Dune has received a live-action adaptation. David Lynch directed a Dune film that was released in 1984. It was met with polarizing reviews but has since gained cult status. The 2000 Dune mini-series, meanwhile, remains one of the highest-rated programs on the Sci-Fi channel.
Dune is currently set to be released on November 20th, 2020.
