Speaking to TVLine, the mind behind such television hits as Lost and The Leftovers, attempted to end speculation on his involvement with the show. Check out the quote below:
“As of right now, I haven’t had any meetings with HBO about Watchmen.”
Lindelof went on to talk about his love for the source material and how he desires to see a high-quality adaptation. In doing so, he does seem to hint that he has been approached in some capacity by HBO to be a part of the series. Lindelof said:
“I’ve been very vocal about my love for those twelve issues…that they were completely and totally inspiring for all the storytelling that I did subsequently, and that I owe a debt to it. I do feel like I have to weigh the balance of ‘should it exist’ before I decide to take it on, and I’m sort of in that process now. I hold the source material in such high regard, it would literally be the worst feeling in the world to screw it up…all I can say is I’m thinking about Watchmen a lot right now.”
Of course Lindelof has been involved with adapting several other big franchises before, including Star Trek and Prometheus, with critically mixed results. It is clear to see that he as a fan would want the project to be done as faithfully as possible. Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaptation was quite close to the source material, but received a tepid response overall.
What do you think, should Lindelof help shepherd HBO’s Watchmen series? Sound off in the comments below!
