‘Watchmen’: Jeremy Irons Playing Older Ozymandias, Jean Smart Joins The HBO Series

SlashFilm reports that Jeremy Irons will play an older Ozymandias in HBO’s Watchmen and Jean Smart has joined the cast of the series.

When Jeremy Irons joined the cast of HBO’s Watchmen, his character was described as an “aging and imperious lord of a British manor.” Now, it has been confirmed that the Academy Award-winning actor will portray an older version of Adrian Veidt, the brilliant and wealthy industrialist who previously assumed the superhero name Ozymandias. In Alan Moore’ original Watchmen comic, Ozymandias orchestrated a fake alien invasion and killed thousands in an attempt to prevent nuclear armageddon and bring humanity together against a common but fictional enemy.

Furthermore, 24 and Legion star Jean Smart has joined the cast of the HBO series as an FBI agent Blake. Tasked with tracking down vigilantes, Smart’s character shares the same surname as Watchmen character Edward Blake, who is more commonly known as The Comedian. In the original comic, The Comedian is a vigilante turned government operative whose death serves as the impetus for the story of Alan Moore’s comic. Whether or not Agent Blake and The Comedian are related is currently unknown.

Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, WATCHMEN embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.

Watchmen stars Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, and Dylan Schombing. The series is produced for HBO by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television, based on characters from DC.

Damon Lindelof also serves as an executive producer alongside Nicole Kassell, Tom Spezialy, Stephen Williams, and Joseph Iberti. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will compose the score for the show.

Watchmen debuts in 2019 on HBO.
