The Watchmen nod in question can be during the Smallville battle between Henry Cavill’s Superman and General Zod’s underlings. As Superman gazes at a Kryptonian spacecraft, the shot is composed almost exactly like a shot in Watchmen and in both cases, an American flag is painted on the side of a wall.
