Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) is currently in talks to develop a TV Series for HBO based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' comic series Watchmen.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Lindelof is in talks to develop a TV Series for HBO based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ brilliant world-renowned comic book series, Watchmen. THR’s sources tell them that the series is in the early stages of development and that no official deal has been inked. Representatives for HBO and Warner Bros. have declined to comment.
Last we heard, an HBO series based on Watchmen was originally being developed with director Zack Snyder attached. Snyder directed the 2009 Watchmen film which starred Patrick Wilson, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Carla Gugino and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The film was met with middling reviews (though it is Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and only grossed $185.3 million worldwide on a $130 million budget. Snyder recently had to exit the DC Extended Universe mega-film Justice League to spend time with his family following the tragic death of his daughter. His apparent departure from the Watchmen series, if he was even still working on it, is to be expected.
In the past, Damon Lindelof has been outspoken about his obsessive love for Watchmen, telling CBR back in 2009, “From the flashbacks to the nonlinear storytelling to the deeply flawed heroes, these are all elements that I try to put into everything I write.” When Snyder’s film was released, Lindelof offered up a lot of praise for it, stating, “It’s the most married-to-the-original-text version of Watchmen that could’ve been made.” We’ll just have to wait and see what Lindelof brings to the table in this new version of the material, if he gets the chance.
So the real question now, though, is: Who watches the Watchmen? Perhaps we all will if this show finally comes to life on HBO.
