Last weekend, Disney released a special look at their most recent rebooted childhood franchise in Aladdin.
The fan backlash was unbelievable over Will Smith’s design as the blue Genie.! I mean nobody saw it coming. At least that’s what we think.
Digital media producer D-Piddy took to his Instagram account this past Wednesday and tweeted this hilarious meme below:
The tweet is indeed very funny and it even inspired Super Bros Movies writer @DanielRPK to respond with a rumor suggesting the trailer was released to the response from fans to Will Smith in Aladdin:
“Yup. In fact it was supposed to come out next month…”
Low and behold, as soon as word spread about Frozen 2, people began to stop talking about Aladdin and Will Smith’s genie altogether. Not to say that everything is forgiven and forgotten, that special look most definitely left a bad first impression.
Disney studios has not confirmed or denied that the trailer was scheduled to release next month or that the Aladdin trailer had any influence in their decision to release the trailer early if at all, but it was conveniently timed. Well done Disney!
Let’s set one thing straight, Will Smith is still a mega movie star. When it comes to talent, there aren’t many names on the list that have the kind of box office draw he still has before him and anytime you can recruit a someone of Will Smith’s caliber for a film as well loved as Aladdin, you’d be sure to get him.
The mixed results are unfortunate and I bet Will Smith and Disney execs wish that Men In Black neuralizer was real right now. What was your reaction to Will Smith’s genie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
“Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.
Directed by Guy Ritchie from a script he co-wrote with John August, the film stars Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban as the Sultan, Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders, and Numan Acar as Hakim.
Aladdin will be released in theatres on May 24, 2019.
