It’s no secret that Will Smith’s Genie from the upcoming live-action adaptation of the animated Disney classic Aladdin didn’t quite land right with fans and critics all over the internet. We’ve seen parodies involving Genie crossovers with Avengers villain Thanos, Dragon Ball Z villain Majin Buu, and even Shrek which only means that Will Smith’s character will have to be outstanding in the movie for us to even compare it with Robin Willams’ original version in the animated classic film.
In the meantime, Derpfakes, a Youtube channel which specializes in parodies involving the Deepfake face-swap technology, replaced Will Smith’s face with Robin Williams’ in the latest Aladdin trailer:
It’s safe to say that, even if the face-swap looks creepy, nostalgia also takes over when watching this particular edit. Robin Williams’ interpretation of the genie is almost legendary amongst people who were kids in the ’80s and ’90s, so Will Smith has the herculean task of convincing everyone that his interpretation is on par with what Robin Williams did when the movie hits theaters later this year.
Some suspect that Disney released the Frozen 2 trailer due to the backlash they felt with the Aladdin trailer, which got a lot of mixed reactions, to say the least. Of course, the internet stopped worrying about Aladdin and instantly switched the conversation to how much Frozen 2 was expected. Disney may have dodged this particular bullet, but reviews are coming later this year and then we’ll know for sure if Guy Ritchie made it with his remake of the Disney classic.
What do you think Will Smith needs to do in order to achieve what Robin Williams did with the Genie? Sound off in the comment section below!
