Willem Dafoe Opens Up About Difference Between Filming ‘Spider-Man’ And ‘Aquaman’

Willem Dafoe may be playing Vulko in Aquaman but some fans might forget that he once faced-off against the titular hero of 2002’s Spider-Man.

Superhero properties have become so huge that there are quite a few actors who have played several characters across Marvel and DC. One of the newest additions to that list of actors is Willem Dafoe, who plays Vulko in Aquaman, an ally to the titular hero. That wasn’t the case in 2002, when Dafoe starred in Spider-Man as Norman Osborne, aka Green Goblin, and returned for brief appearances in both sequels.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Dafoe briefly talked about the difference between filming Aquaman and Spider-Man. Spidey’s first big-screen outing has plenty of CGI in it but one look at the Aquaman trailer will show fans that Dafoe’s latest superhero film has upped the ante in that department quite a bit. This is what Dafoe had to say about filming the two epic films.
“They are different. They’re very different – because they have different aims. They’re working with different materials, their working with different intentions. But that’s okay! I like to mix it up because that way you don’t get stuck. You don’t start to believe that there’s only one way of doing things, and you don’t start believe there’s only one way of living, and you don’t start to believe there’s only a certain kind of film that’s worth making. It keeps you loose.
Aquaman hits theaters this December and has the potential to be as big as Spider-Man was 16 years ago. Sam Raimi’s inaugural web-crawler adventure arrived in a time when there was no Iron Man, Batman Begins, or Guardians of the Galaxy. When Spider-Man released it was the Iron Man of its time, even besting the success of Bryan Singer’s X-Men. Fans will have to wait until this Christmas to find out just how successful DC’s latest will be.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Aquaman as soon as more information becomes available. Is there any other comic book role you’d like to see Dafoe play? From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an acition-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.

Aquaman will be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
