Mashable dropped the news today that William Dafoe has signed on to voice Ryuk in Netflix’s Death Note film. The adaptation will be live action and based off of the popular manga and anime series of the same name.
Dafoe joins the cast alongside Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Keith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi and Shea Whigham. Ryuk serves as a main secondary character in the anime as he follows around Light after Light finds the Death Note. The Death Note is able to kill any person whose name is written inside, you can also specify time of death and how they die though the default is heart attack. The one caveat of the Death Note is you must know the name and face of the person whose name you write down– the face is used to distinguish between people who share a name. Light begins to play god with his newly found power until an investigator named L is tasked to stop him.
Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka are producing Death Note. Jonathan Eirich, Miri Yoon, Brendan Ferguson and John Powers Middleton are executive producing.
The project was originally going to be at Warner Bros. before moving to Netflix which has the project slated for a release next year.
