‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Producer Explains Why The Release Date Was Pushed Back

During an interview with Collider, producer Charles Roven explained the reason behind the release date delay for Wonder Woman 1984.

The highly-anticipated sequel to Wonder Woman was originally going to be released in theaters in November 2019, but before the studio subsequently pushed the release date back to the summer of the following year. Producer Charles Roven explained that while the filmmaking team wanted to release the sequel in the summer of 2020, the studio needed a tentpole project for 2019 before opting to take extra time to finish the film:

“We always wanted the date that we are on right now. The studio felt that until their slate for the year before came together—and they had an amazing end of 2018—that they needed to have a big what I call aircraft carrier, a “tentpole”, in [2019]. We had a very rushed pre-production because Patty also did the TNT show and we had a very rushed post-production schedule in order to make the date that we were on, which was November 1, 2019. We were doing it because the studio said they really needed it, and then at a certain point they came to us and they said, ‘You know what, you guys are right. Let’s go back to the month that you guys released Wonder Woman 1 in, and take the extra time.”

Full details on the Wonder Woman 1984 plot are currently unknown, though the film will follow the titular hero as she comes into conflict with the Soviet Union in the 1980s and encounters a formidable new adversary named Cheetah.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wigg, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be released in theaters on June 4, 2020.
