‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Director Patty Jenkins Talks Chris Pine’s Return

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins addresses the return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor in the DC sequel.

Since Steve Trevor died in in the first Wonder Woman film, fans were surprised that the sequel would seemingly undo that decision when the first footage arrived showing Chris Pine’s return. But according to director Patty Jenkins, there was never an intention to revive the character when the story was being put together. It isn’t clear yet how the heroic spy will return from the dead in Wonder Woman 1984, but it’s most likely tied to Maxwell Lord’s villainous plans.

The director spoke to Total Film about bringing Pine back to reprise his role as Steve Trevor, explaining that the audience and a characters go on a journey together and the hero’s return was intrinsic to the story of the Wonder Woman sequel. Jenkins also pointed out that she loved working with the star on the first film, but that his return feels natural.

“You all go on the journey together. The movie and the characters all go on a journey together. It did not at all come from, ‘We’ve got to have Steve back.’ I was so pleased when I thought of the story idea, and then intrinsic to that story was Steve coming back, because we love Chris. But it just came naturally.”

The film is one of the many projects affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Originally scheduled to open in theaters in early June, Warner Bros. opted to push the release date to mid-August in hopes that the crisis will have abated by then and movie theaters, which have been forced to shut down, can re-open their doors.

Full details on the Wonder Woman 1984 plot are being kept under wraps, but the film is said to follow Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince as she comes into conflict with a formidable new adversary named Cheetah and businessman Maxwell Lord.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, the film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on August 14, 2020.
