Spoilers incoming for the recent issue of Wonder Woman #58, but one thing you probably at least know by now is that Ares is the god of war. Nothing really spoiler-related about that. However, one thing you’ll also know is that, as a god, and in particular when you’re Ares, he has a great amount of control and influence over us mere mortals. So Ares has spent a bit of time imprisoned within the pages of the Wonder Woman comics as of recent. A god can grow restless with that much free time on their hands, you know?
So Ares instructs Darkseid’s daughter, Grail, to kill him, and she obeys. During all of this, Steve Trevor has been on assignment in Durkovia. Don’t bother looking that up. When Steve is reported missing, Diana goes in search of him. She finds, instead, nothing but war and desolation. No Man’s Land, basically. But in the middle of all of this is Ares wreaking havoc in the way that only he can. That alone would be one way to end an issue, but let’s dial that up to 11 when Ares reveals himself and… he looks suspiciously a lot like Steve Trevor. Here, look at the reveal.
Now before you get your puzzlers puzzling, this could just be the god of war taking control of Steve. Again, I wouldn’t put it past the god of war. Plus, Ares would go after the strongest individual or one with the best will, and that would be Steve Trevor. Plus, he’s an established character in Wonder Woman lore, so how could he not be the target for the god of war? Still, taking control of Trevor probably won’t do Ares any favors in Diana’s eyes, and since the issue ends here, we’re left with one heck of a cliffhanger.
It’s also possible that this might not be Steve and just some other, familiar looking individual, but then, the figure points out that Diana should recognize him. Still, it sets up what should be a very interesting confrontation next time. Let us know your thoughts on the Ares reveal in the latest issue of Wonder Woman in the comments below.
