‘Wonder Woman’ Overperforms Overseas With $232M 2-Week Total

Wonder Woman continues to be the shot in the arm that the expanding DC Extended Universe needed by overperforming expectations at the second week of the movie’s run at the box office.

Exhibitor Relations (an official box office outlet) has just revealed that Wonder Woman, which was expected to pull in $57M or so over its second weekend, has managed to surprise distributors once again by making an additional $60M in several overseas markets:

It should be noted that Wonder Woman still has yet to open in a number of major box office regions like Germany, Spain, and Japan, alongside lesser box offices like Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, and Egypt, so a relatively small second weekend drop from the $125M international opening weekend is absolutely nothing to sneeze at. This news also follows the recent announcement that Wonder Woman actually managed to outdo its expected second-weekend domestic performance by a significant amount. With how well it’s done in mind (an approximate $437M total in ten days), it seems a little surreal to imagine that not that long ago, some estimates stated that the movie was only expected to make $65M on its domestic opening weekend!

At the current rate, Wonder Woman is looking to become the highest-grossing movie directed by woman (without a co-director), surpassing Pitch Perfect 2 ($288 million) and Twilight ($391 million). It has yet to exceed the totals made by Fifty Shades of Grey ($571 million), Mamma Mia! ($609 million) and Kung Fu Panda 2 ($665 million), but all of those look to be reasonable goals to surpass with the remaining markets the film has yet to open in likely producing similarly great results to everywhere else, and the strong holds that the movie has had in the regions the film has already made its mark.

Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Wonder Woman is playing in theaters. Its cast includes Gal Gadot as Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Lucy Davis as Etta Candy, David Thewlis as Sir Patrick Morgan, Elena Anaya as Doctor Isabel Maru (Doctor Poison), and Danny Huston as General Erich Ludendorff.
