‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Director Patty Jenkins Shares Her Favorite Thing About Character

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has revealed her favorite thing about the Amazonian princess.

Despite being pushed to August due to the coronavirus outbreak, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 is arguably the most anticipated movie of the year. Gal Gadot debuted as the iconic character in Batman v Superman in 2016, and later received her own solo origin film in 2017’s Wonder Woman. The solo film was a critical and commercial success, with Patty Jenkins’ direction being singled out for highlighting how empathetic and caring the titular character can be.

Now, with Wonder Woman 1984 set to hit theatres later this year, the director discussed her favorite thing about the iconic character being her empathetic nature in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.

“That’s my favorite thing about her, heroism involves keeping your love and compassion intact while you try to change the world. I love that about Wonder Woman and it was one of the things I felt the most passionate about being maintained, because it was something that I loved about her growing up. She was an inspiration and no part of her made me feel that I couldn’t also be a woman, and also be a mother, and also be a wife or a girlfriend or a partner. She’s a whole-bodied hero who stands for goodness, but also love and compassion and kindness. That’s where it was the most challenging—the world not thinking a female superhero could be powerful.”

One of Wonder Woman’s biggest praises was that Gal Gadot’s character was radically empathetic and emotionally vulnerable and open. Patty Jenkins retaining those core characteristics is what has made the cinematic rendition of the character so popular. It’s also quite interesting how Patty Jenkins mentions that she’s loved the character since she was child because, after all, Wonder Woman has and always been a beacon of hope.

The passion Patty Jenkins exudes for the character is quite heartwarming. Her love for the character is much needed in these trying times, especially when knowing that the film’s release date was pushed back. Originally set to hit multiplexes in June, Wonder Woman 1984 shifted its release date to August due to the coronavirus outbreak.
