Hutch Parker, a producer on the 'X-Men' movies expresses that the cosmic universe could possibly be explored in the upcoming 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'
The first time the Dark Phoenix story was in the films, it was used in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand. Unfortunately, this particular iteration of the Dark Phoenix disappointed many fans – and in many ways, it degraded the impact of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) dealing with her powers.
Dark Phoenix was hinted at in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse. During the climax of that film, we see a young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) showcasing her powers as Dark Phoenix in a pivotal sequence. This moment teased that we will be seeing that story explored again.
Hutch Parker, who serves as a producer on X-Men: Dark Phoenix had the chance to discuss the highly-anticipated new entry in the franchise. When asked about what the team plans on doing this time around, Parker hinted at what fans should expect to be different:
Quite a bit. Again, I can’t really speak to anything specifically but I think the challenge as offered by all the films we’ve mentioned is very – we’re very aware of the challenge that those movies pose and what it sort of demands of us as storytellers mining, again, one of the great comic runs in The Dark Phoenix Saga. Our hope and expectation is to try and do something that feels different, that takes the audience into a different tone and a different sense of cinematic style that is appropriately suited to the story we’re telling. So I’m trying to answer your question without giving anything away.
Parker was also asked about whether or not X-Men: Dark Phoenix may explore the cosmic side of this universe. Without revealing too much, Parker teased the possibilities:
That is certainly a possibility. That is certainly a possibility. Yes.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is slated for a November 2, 2018 release. Josh Boone’s The New Mutants, starring Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, will hit theaters April 13, 2018.
