During a recent article published by Deadline, the site stated that the film is not in bubbling development. Fox still has Gambit slated for a 2020 release date but currently has no director. Channing Tatum is still attached to the project but it is currently unknown whether or not the film will ever be produced.
According to longtime X-Men producer, Lauren Shuler Donner, the fate of the Gambit film and the future of the X-Men is in the hands of Disney. She said, “it’s all in Disney’s playground and they get to decide”.
Gambit is, of course, no stranger to adaptations. The character appeared in the 90s X-Men animated series and also appeared in X-Men: Evolution. The character made his first live-action appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in a minor supporting role. The Channing Tatum version of the character was reportedly meant to debut in the 2016 film, X-Men: Apocalypse but was written out before production began. And with Disney now buying out Fox, it could be even longer before we see Gambit on the silver screen again.

The next X-Men film, Dark Phoenix is being directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Here is the plot synopsis for the film:
“In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”
The film is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2019.
